SUMMARY:North Edinburgh Community Seed-Saving Initiative - First Meeting
DESCRIPTION:This will be the first meeting to discuss setting up a seed-saving community in North Edinburgh. We are looking to gather a group who are interested in saving seeds\, sharing seeds and swapping seed stories. As it’s the first meeting\, it would just be great to share experience (none is necessary to join)\, what seeds you have saved\, what you would like to save\, and any seeds that you would like to share. \nWe will have hot drinks and biscuits to help the conversation along! \nPlease email lisa@lauristonfarm.org if you would like to join on this date or at a future date. \nWe will meet in the Welcome portacabin in the farmyard (EH4 5EX) \nAs it’s a small indoor space\, this meet up is not suitable for bringing pet dogs. \nAccess Notes\nThere is one step up into the portacabin. It is a rough compacted stone path from the Toby Carvery car park. The cabin is set on rough grass\, just off this path. This will be an informal and chatty gathering\, in a relatively small space. We don’t have microphones. There is some background noise from passers by and planes overhead. \nAssistance dogs welcome of course. \nThere is a spacious\, level access\, single cubicle\, gender neutral toilet in the Community Allotments that participants can use. This is on rough grassy ground\, no steps. \nThere is no on-farm parking\, but we can make arrangements for disabled people who need to drive in for access reasons. \nPlease email lisa@lauristonfarm.org if you have any access requests or questions.

DESCRIPTION:This will be the final Market Garden volunteering session of the year \nJoin us 10:00-12:00 to help out in the Market Garden\, and experience veg growing at a large scale \nVolunteer Sign up here: https://volunteersignup.org/3LCFJ  \nWe’ll share a coffee and biscuit after\, or you can bring your lunch to enjoy in the gardens. \nYou don’t need any specific knowledge or skills to volunteer in the Market Garden. You do need some energy and to be fairly steady on your feet. Market Garden volunteering sessions can involve quite a bit of walking and physical activity. The tasks are usually ‘big jobs’ where many hands make light work (eg. kneeling or bending to weed\, wheelbarrowing woodchip for paths\, planting a big area with transplants). \nIf you’re worried about your body’s stamina or mobility\, you might prefer to start with the Community Garden drop-in sessions instead. \nBut we don’t ask anyone to go beyond their limits for any task\, and you can always take breaks or rotate between jobs. They’re already improving things for wildlife\, and bringing people together. As they grow\, they will make the soil healthier and more stable\, support much more biodiversity\, provide windbreaks and shelter for our crops\, and crops themselves of fruits\, nuts and coppice wood. You do need some energy and to be fairly steady on your feet. Market Garden volunteering sessions can involve quite a bit of walking and physical activity. The tasks are usually ‘big jobs’ where many hands make light work (eg. kneeling or bending to weed\, wheelbarrowing woodchip for paths\, planting a big area with transplants). \nIf you’re worried about your body’s stamina or mobility\, you might prefer to start with the Community Garden drop-in sessions instead. \nBut we don’t ask anyone to go beyond their limits for any task\, and you can always take breaks or rotate between jobs. This one-day workshop gives an introduction to why we should all be saving seed\, and the basics of how to go about it\, with opportunities for hands-on experience and a chance to see the farm’s various seed-saving projects. \nThe day will include a tour of the Market Garden\, practical activities in the Community Garden\, with fresh soup and bread for lunch\, plenty of time for questions and chat. \nThis is one of our favourite subjects and we’re excited to share it with you – join us if you can! \npart of Our Seeds – the ongoing project to rebuild seed sovereignty in north Edinburgh\n~~Our Seeds: All Seeds are Migrants\, Every Seed Has a Story ~~ \nClick here to book tickets on Eventbrite \n  \nAccessibility Notes\nThis workshop includes crossing the farm to tour the market garden\, and hands-on seed saving activities in the community garden. We have outdoor kit you can borrow (wellies\, waterproofs\, fleeces).
