SUMMARY:Market Garden Volunteering
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday mornings 10:00-12:00 to help out in the Market Garden\, and experience veg growing at a large scale \nVolunteer Sign up here: https://volunteersignup.org/3LCFJ  \nWe’ll share a coffee and biscuit after\, or you can bring your lunch to enjoy in the gardens. \nYou don’t need any specific knowledge or skills to volunteer in the Market Garden. You do need some energy and to be fairly steady on your feet. Market Garden volunteering sessions can involve quite a bit of walking and physical activity. The tasks are usually ‘big jobs’ where many hands make light work (eg. kneeling or bending to weed\, wheelbarrowing woodchip for paths\, planting a big area with transplants). \nIf you’re worried about your body’s stamina or mobility\, you might prefer to start with the Community Garden drop-in sessions instead. \nBut we don’t ask anyone to go beyond their limits for any task\, and you can always take breaks or rotate between jobs. You are welcome to use this as a way to help you build up your fitness. If you are not sure if it’s right for you\, please email info@lauristonfarm.org with any questions

SUMMARY:Sow Grateful: Our Biomes
DESCRIPTION:Our Biomes: a microbiome health and soil art workshop at Lauriston Farm \nClick here to book your free space on Eventbrite \nLauriston Farm is transforming the invisible life of North Edinburgh. Find out what that means for our health in this immersive microbiome art workshop. We’ll be painting with the soil and going on a journey with the bacteria that live there. The workshop will involve some learning activities\, some embodiment and mindfulness\, learning how to make paints from soil\, and painting with soil-based watercolours. Eventually\, the paintings will add up to make a community mural that shows ‘Our Biomes’ – our relationships with the invisible world of bacteria and what they mean for community health. \nSuitable for ages 16+ \nThis workshop is offered by Toby Pepperrell (medical doctor and wellbeing economist\, currently doing research on urban farms and public health – scroll down for more about Toby). \nIt is free to attend but spaces are limited\, so please book\, and if you can no longer attend\, please cancel your space so it can go to someone else. \nClick here to book your free space on Eventbrite \n  \nAbout Sow Grateful\nWhen we sow seeds to grow food\, we continue a lifelong partnership between people\, plants\, pollinators and the hidden world of microorganisms in our guts and in the soil. It’s not just human hard work that makes a harvest. This is a day to celebrate the web of life we’re in. \nWith thanks to the Kũmatha group (allotment holders at the farm)\, and all the contributors\, we are offering a choice of two morning workshops (ages 16+) and an open\, all-ages live music gig in the afternoon… \nBring a picnic and stay for free music in the afternoon with The Black Sails Collective and singer-songwriter Mike Delaitre from around 1:30pm-3pm (the afternoon session is unlimited spaces and all-ages\, no booking needed). \nAll the contributors to Sow Grateful are generously gifting their time for free and we are so grateful to them too. \n  \nMore About Toby Pepperrell\nToby Pepperrell is a medical doctor and PhD student at the University of Stirling. His research looks at what urban agroecology means for health and places like Lauriston Farm\, asking the question: How can soil microorganisms like bacteria change how we understand our bodies and our cities? The research uses art and creative writing to make sense of these complex topics in unexpected ways. Workshops like this one will be the background to a citizen science approach to understanding microbial public health and design local interventions. \n  \nWorkshop Accessibility Notes\nWe will be in our Community Garden. The ground is rough and uneven\, but there are no steps and people have navigated it in robust wheelchairs. We will mostly be outdoors – be prepared for windy north Edinburgh! There are hands on activities\, but no heavy lifting. We can support a small number of vehicles to drive onto the farm to park at the entrance for this workshop – this is reserved for disabled people who need it as an access requirement – please email info@lauristonfarm.org if you need to do this (or have any other accessibility questions or requests). \n  \n~~~ \n‘Harvest’ image with barrow by Trina McKendrick\, Written in Film

SUMMARY:Sow Grateful: Pollinators
DESCRIPTION:Pollinators\, with Huw Pennell \nClick here to book your free space on Eventbrite \nDid you know there are over 270 species of bees in the UK\, and with only one being the Honey bee? Join us to explore the captivating world of these vital pollinators and discover how they contribute to growing your fruit and vegetables. \nAll wild bees are facing challenges from pesticides\, climate change\, habitat loss\, and a lack of suitable nesting sites. At this workshop\, you will learn about the new bee banks and bee hotels we have installed for solitary bees\, as well as the other work to support pollinators at the farm. We’ll help you identify various bee species\, and finish with a game of Bee Bingo! \nThis workshop is offered by specialist volunteer Huw Pennell (who also carries out the bumblebee monitoring surveys at the farm) \nSuitable for ages 16+ \nIt is free to attend but spaces are limited\, so please book\, and if you can no longer attend\, please cancel your space so it can go to someone else. \nClick here to book your free space on Eventbrite \n  \nAbout Sow Grateful\nWhen we sow seeds to grow food\, we continue a lifelong partnership between people\, plants\, pollinators and the hidden world of microorganisms in our guts and in the soil.

SUMMARY:Sow Grateful: Live Music Gig
DESCRIPTION:A free afternoon of music from The Black Sails Collective\, and singer-songwriter Mike Delaitre. \nThe Black Sails Collective draws from a wide range of influences and instruments. Think of traditional Scottish folk and classic rock put through a blender! Almost all of their material is original and their songs can be described as poetic\, vivid and meaningful; the recurring message being the need for us to take good care of the world we live in\, and of each other. \nSinger-songwriter Mike Delaitre is from the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius\, an island of sun\, warmth and colour. With his roots in reggae\, Mike’s music is a fusion of influences from Mauritius and beyond. Mike’s vision is to use music as an example and as a tool to bring people together. Currently based in Fife\, Mike continues a journey to bring colour and warmth to people’s hearts. \nBring a picnic and enjoy live music with a view \nSuitable for all ages \nFree to attend\, no booking needed – just come along \n  \nAbout Sow Grateful\nWhen we sow seeds to grow food\, we continue a lifelong partnership between people\, plants\, pollinators and the hidden world of microorganisms in our guts and in the soil. It’s not just human hard work that makes a harvest. This is a day to celebrate the web of life we’re in. \nWith thanks to the Kũmatha group (allotment holders at the farm)\, and all the contributors\, we are offering a choice of two morning workshops (ages 16+) on ‘Our Biomes‘ and ‘Pollinators‘\, plus this open\, all-ages live music gig in the afternoon. \nAll the contributors to Sow Grateful are generously gifting their time for free and we are so grateful to them too. \n  \nMusic Gig Accessibility Notes\nWe will be around the wooden gazebo and wildflower mound\, just beyond the farmyard. The ground is rough and uneven\, but there are no steps. The wildflower mound is quite steeply sloped\, but there are also ground level areas around the gazebo. People have navigated this ground in robust wheelchairs. We can supply you with a seat if needed. \nWe will be outdoors – be prepared for windy north Edinburgh! The music will be amplified (not acoustic). \nWe can support a small number of vehicles to drive onto the farm to park in the farmyard – this is reserved for disabled people who need it as an access requirement – please email info@lauristonfarm.org if you need to do this (or have any other accessibility questions or requests). \n~~~ \n‘Harvest’ image with barrow by Trina McKendrick\, Written in Film

SUMMARY:Community Meal
DESCRIPTION:An experiment! We’ve been looking for a way to do regular community meals at the Community Kitchen. This summer\, we are going to try it out with a pot of soup and a salad using our very own veg\, with some delicious Granton Garden Bakery bread\, on the last Thursday of the summer months at 1pm (31 July\, 28 August & 25 September). \nIf you want to get more involved\, you can help prepare the meal by coming along to the Tuesday drop-in session in the same week\, when we will harvest the veg and do some meal prep. \nYou can also bring something to share on the day if you feel like it (but absolutely not necessary). Everyone welcome\, no need to book – just come along and eat. We will be at the hand built Kitchen in the Community Garden and Allotments.
