SUMMARY:Seed Share
DESCRIPTION:Come and share the abundance that lies within the beautiful Seed Kist! The Kist contains thousands of seeds saved and collected on the farm and in North Edinburgh as well as commercial seed packets that were surplus to people’s needs. It’s a proper treasure trove. If you have seeds to add to the treasure in the Kist\, bring them along but it’s also just fine to come along and take some seeds for your vegetable growing this year. \nLook forward to seeing you there. Please choose active travel (walk/wheel/cycle/public transport) if at all possible\, rather than driving – for the benefit of all local residents (of all species!). \nWe will be in the green portacabin near the gate at the back of the Toby Carvery car park. \nAccess: It’s a compacted stone path to the door of the cabin. There are a couple of steps up into the cabin. We can come out to meet you on the level if needed – please contact us if you would like to make an arrangement\, or we can work it out on the day. \n(NB this was originally on our calendar as the 27th January but we had to change the date – this is the correct one\, and the first seed swap of the year)

SUMMARY:Wassail Celebration
DESCRIPTION:We’re bringing back the Wassail tradition in the new Community Orchard! This will be a fun event planned by the Community Orchard group – come along to sing\, make noise and encourage the trees to grow well this year. Also a great chance to find out more about the orchard and get involved. \nFor those who don’t know\, an Apple Wassail is an old way to celebrate apple trees and wish for a good harvest (and ward off any malicious spirits who might be lurking about the orchard!). We value it and revive it now because it warms the heart\, brings people together\, and helps us give importance to our young orchard trees\, and to the wisdom in the old ways of stewarding the land. The Community Orchard group has planned apple drinks\, songs\, poetry\, and merry noise-making activities. We hope you will join us! \nPlease choose active travel (walk/wheel/cycle/public transport) if at all possible\, rather than driving – for the benefit of all local residents (of all species!). \nMeet us at the green portacabin at the back of the Toby Carvery\, or round in the Community Orchard (just past the fenced allotments\, on the right hand side as you come in via Toby Carvery). Access note: There are no steps\, but we will be off the compacted path and onto rough grassy ground.

SUMMARY:Birdsong Identification Walk
DESCRIPTION:For the third year\, Professor John Frank will lead volunteers on birdsong identification walks around the farm\, once a month from spring to summer. This gives us a count of the bird species – an important part of our biodiversity monitoring work. \nYou can join us in 2024. You don’t need previous knowledge – John will teach you how to identify birds\, using the mobile app Merlin (ideally download this to a device that you can bring on the walk). \nWe have to restrict numbers on these walks\, to avoid disturbing the birds\, so it really is a case of the early bird catching the worm for the signup sheets. \nClick here to book a space on the March walk

SUMMARY:Our Seeds: Seed Share
DESCRIPTION:Drop in to the seed share to get some free seeds you can try growing this year. We are lucky enough to look after the Seed Kist at the farm – a stash of seeds for the community\, some saved from crops at the farm\, and by other growers in north Edinburgh\, and some spare commercial seed packets that people donated. You don’t need to bring any seeds if you don’t have any – it’s a free share\, and we want these seeds in your hands. \nWe will be in the green portacabin\, through the gate at the back of the Toby Carvery car park. It is level but rough ground\, with a step up to the cabin. We can come out to meet you if the portacabin is not accessible – feel free to contact us ahead of time if you want to make an arrangement\, or we can work it out on the day. \nNo need to book – it’s a drop in. See you on the 16th! \n

SUMMARY:Learn to Build a Vermiculture Compost System
DESCRIPTION:Would you like to learn how to make a continuous flow vermiculture* compost system? \n*Vermiculture is a sustainable and efficient method of composting with earthworms that can be done in small spaces and has a wide range of benefits. It is a great option for those who want to reduce their waste and improve soil health. \nThis hands-on-tools timber based workshop will teach you all the ins and outs of this composting system. Led by Emma (from Lauriston Farm)\, and Marco (from Rhyze Mushrooms). It will take place in the Market Garden over a full day (from 10am – 4pm\, with an hour’s lunch break). \nTogether we’ll make one big system for Rhyze Mushrooms and our Market Garden team to use on site at Lauriston Farm as a pilot to gather data and find out how much organic matter the worms can transform into nutrient rich fertiliser! \nThis workshop is ticketed with a solidarity pricing scheme. \nThose who can are encouraged to pay a little more\, and those who need it are encouraged to accept a discount. The idea is that by paying on a sliding scale\, we hope to foster more justice\, equity and diversity in our food system and society. \nIf you think you might be able to pay a little more for your ticket please ‘offer solidarity’. If you feel that you need a discount please select a discounted or free ticket. There’s no questions asked – it’s available if you feel you need it. \nClick here to book on Eventbrite
