SUMMARY:Market Garden Volunteering
DESCRIPTION:Join us to help out in the Market Garden\, and experience veg growing at a large scale \nVolunteer Sign up here: https://volunteersignup.org/Y3KTB \nIt’s a two-hour session\, starting at 10am. Please try to arrive on time as we explain and set up all the tasks at the beginning. \nWe’ll share a coffee and biscuit after\, or you can bring your lunch to enjoy in the gardens. \nNewcomers and auld hands are all very welcome. You don’t need any specific knowledge or skills to volunteer in the Market Garden. You do need some energy and to be fairly steady on your feet. Market Garden volunteering sessions can involve quite a bit of walking and physical activity. The tasks are usually ‘big jobs’ where many hands make light work (eg. weeding\, wheelbarrowing woodchip for paths\, planting a big area with transplants). \nIf you’re worried about your body’s stamina or mobility\, you might prefer to start with the Community Garden drop-in sessions instead. \nBut we don’t ask anyone to go beyond their limits for any task\, and you can always take breaks or rotate between jobs. You are welcome to use this as a way to help you build up your fitness. If you are not sure if it’s right for you\, please contact us with any questions. Otherwise\, sign up and we’ll see you there!

SUMMARY:Seed Patch Volunteering
DESCRIPTION:The farm produces a lot of its own seed because we know from experience that if we produce our seed well\, it makes for way healthier plants than anything we buy. Seed learns to adapt to our soil and climate. Saving seed is a crucial part of food sovereignty\, and that means taking care of this year’s crop. Year-on-year\, we produce more seed and hopefully get better at it! We could do with some extra hands on Friday mornings to help us grow and care for our seed crops. \nIf you’d like to help with the crops that we are growing to save the seeds\, sign up here: https://volunteersignup.org/L73WY \n  \nWho Is This For?\nYou don’t need previous experience. For this session\, you do need to be fairly steady on your feet and have a bit of stamina for walking. We supply gloves and any tools. Under 16s welcome\, accompanied by an adult. \n  \nAccess Notes & Directions\nWe will be outdoors working on the seed beds in the market garden. Please dress for windy north Edinburgh. There will be quite a bit of walking on rough grassy ground\, and bending over to weed etc. No heavy lifting. The market garden is on the west side of the farm\, near Cramond Road South. You can come in from Cramond Road/Barnton Gardens on foot or bike\, but not by car. You can also walk or cycle across the farm from the Silverknowes side (approx 15-20 minute walk). \nIf you’re arriving by bike\, please don’t turn right off Cramond Road South/Barnton Gardens – it’s a dangerous corner. Keep going to the roundabout and go around it to get a safe left turn into the farm. \n

SUMMARY:Introduction to Seed Saving: Politics and Practicalities
DESCRIPTION:Learn to save seed from the crops you grow. This one-day workshop gives an introduction to why we should all be saving seed\, and the basics of how to go about it\, with opportunities for hands-on experience and a chance to see the farm’s various seed-saving projects. \nThe day will include tours of the seed saving in both the Community Garden and the Market Garden\, practical activities\, fresh soup and bread for lunch\, and plenty of time for questions and chat. \nAt Lauriston Farm\, we save seed for growing on our farm year on year and we know how our crops improve from this practice as the seeds adapt to the particularities of our land. We also grow seed crops for sale and as well as an abundance of seed for exchanging and sharing with our wider community. \nThis is one of our favourite subjects and we’re excited to share it with you – join us if you can! \n  \nClick here to book your space on Ticket Tailor \n(We are repeating this workshop in October if you can’t make this date) \n  \nWho is This For?\nThis workshop is for suitable for beginners. You don’t need to have your own garden or allotment – maybe you will one day. Or you can use these skills in any community growing space. The teaching is aimed at adults but you’re welcome to attend with a baby or young child. It is a repeat of the September workshop with the same name – you don’t need to attend both!\nAccessibility Notes \nWe will start with the plants and seeds in our Community Allotments and Garden. If it’s wet weather\, we will then go into the portacabin in the farmyard – there is one step up to this. For the afternoon\, we will walk across the farm to the Market Garden to explore the seed saving and processing here. Throughout\, we will be moving around on uneven\, rough grassy ground which can get muddy. \nIf it would support you to be able to access this event\, we can arrange parking in the market garden so you could drive around rather than walking across the farm. This is for disabled people who need it for access – please contact us to arrange. \nThere is a spacious\, single cubicle\, level access\, gender-neutral composting toilet in both gardens. \nWe will mostly be outdoors – be prepared for windy north Edinburgh! There will be some hands-on activity\, but no heavy lifting. We have outdoor kit you can borrow (wellies\, waterproofs\, fleeces). We don’t have microphones\, but will be a fairly small group (under 20 people). \nSee below about ticket pricing and financial accessibility. \n\nAbout the Workshop Prices\nWe have three different prices for this workshop. Paying the standard rate makes a contribution to covering our costs. If you can afford to pay the higher rate\, you enable us to offer the discounted rate to folk under financial stress. \nSolidarity (Pay it Forward) £60\nStandard Rate £40\nSolidarity (Take if you Need) £20\n+ booking fee \nClick here to book your space on Ticket Tailor \n  \nWe can arrange a free space if the cost would prevent you from being able to attend – please email communityallotments@lauristonfarm.org to request this \nLocation\nThis workshop starts in the farm’s Community Garden. The entrance is just past the farmyard at the back of the Toby Carvery car park.
