SUMMARY:Adaptation Agriculture - with Joseph Lofthouse
DESCRIPTION:We’re happy to be the venue for this special event with Joseph Lofthouse (author of Landrace Gardening: Food Security Through Biodiversity and Promiscuous Pollination) organised by a collaboration of Abundant Borders and the The Gaia Foundation Seed Sovereignty Programme\, with support from Borders Organic Gardeners. For all seed and plant folk\, Joseph will be giving a talk followed by a Q&A and discussion around adaptation agriculture\, landrace gardening\, and biodiverse crowd breeding. This is a must-see event for any growers interested in plant breeding\, landraces\, increasing plant genetic diversity\, and growing food in increasingly challenging climate conditions. \nBook your ticket here: https://www.tickettailor.com/events/thegaiafoundation/1375423 \n  \n \nDirections for Ticket Holders\nWe will meet in the pack shed at Lauriston Farm Market Garden \nTravel to the Farm\nThe farm address is Lauriston Farm Road\, Edinburgh EH4 5EX. Please use public transport\, walk\, wheel or cycle to get to the farm whenever possible. \nLothian Buses 16\, 27\, 29\, 37 & 47 all stop within 5 minutes of the farm (47 stops near the Market Garden entrance on Cramond Road). We are also near the cycle paths for North Edinburgh. There are places to lock your bike on the farm. \nThere is no public car parking on the farm. \nThe main entrance for the farm is at the back of the Toby Carvery car park: \nhttps://maps.app.goo.gl/gePXSUpPgu5RCnWW7 \nhttps://w3w.co/shiny.hedge.spine \n  \nHow to Find the Market Garden\nThe Market Garden is next to Cramond Road South \nYou can come in from the gate on Cramond Road South on foot or by bike\, or arrive at the main entrance behind Toby Carvery\, and walk/cycle across the farm (allow around 15 minutes to walk across the farm). There is no car parking on Cramond Road South or in the Market Garden (unless you contact us in advance and request a space – spaces are reserved for disabled people who need it for accessibility) \nMarket Garden location: \nhttps://maps.app.goo.gl/6X6LKTPCrHxuebyB7 \nhttps://w3w.co/with.bucket.daisy \n \nPlease note\, the turn into the Market Garden coming downhill on Cramond Road South is a very dangerous blind corner. If you’re arriving at that gate by bike (or in a car for a pre-booked space) we recommend continuing 50m round the corner to the roundabout so you can safely turn and approach the entrance on a left hand turn. \nWe look forward to welcoming you to this event.

SUMMARY:Planting a History of Wheat
DESCRIPTION:Join us to plant a History of Wheat! \nWe first planted a history of wheat plot in 2022 which was harvested in 2023\, and it was really interesting to be able to see how our grains have evolved over hundreds of years. Last time\, our plot started with Emer and Einkorn and an ancient Spelt ancestor\, and\, through 24 different grain varieties\, took us up to newly bred varieties of barley by the James Hutton Institute. \nThis year\, we will be sowing small square metre plots to once again begin to tell the story of the evolution of wild grass into the grains that we eat today. \nThis is part of our ongoing partnership with Granton Community Gardeners\, and the ongoing ‘Our Seeds’ project\, where we keep alive the tradition of food growers saving and using their own seeds\, for the benefit of local communities. \nPlease sign up here to let us know you’re coming: https://volunteersignup.org/9PJ8P \nAll seeds are migrants ~ every seed has a story.

SUMMARY:Volunteer Tree Care
DESCRIPTION:Sapling survival rates are good thanks to positive human impact! We supply all the tools and gardening gloves. You might want to bring snacks to keep your energy up. \n  \nWho Will Be There?\nYou will find people of a mix of ages\, genders\, backgrounds and ethnicities volunteering at the farm. Most live in the neighbourhoods nearby. There’s always at least one member of the Lauriston Farm team at the organised volunteering sessions. We are trained in first aid\, mental health first aid and trauma awareness. Between us\, we also have lived experience of mental and physical health issues\, trauma\, and neurodivergence. \n  \nWhat if I am worried about my fitness or my energy – is it hard work?\nLots of people here have health conditions – including allotment holders\, farm staff and volunteers. But many hands make light work – everyone contributes by doing the bit they can do. When you are volunteering\, you can do the tasks that suit you\, go at your own pace and take breaks. It’s not a competition and we want you to have a good time! \n  \nIs it accessible for people with mobility difficulties?\nIt depends on what you use for support. There are no stairs to the Community Garden\, but it is on uneven\, grassy ground\, which can get muddy – people have accessed it in wheelchairs and mobility scooters\, it depends on the set up you have. If you use a stick or sticks\, and you feel okay on rough ground\, the Community Garden should be accessible. We are working on expanding our range of tools\, eg. long-handled tools to save bending. \nWhat about toilets and refreshments?\nWe have a private\, gender-neutral\, composting toilet volunteers can use. It is spacious and has no steps. We always have tea and biscuits at volunteering sessions. We don’t have public toilets or a cafe. \n  \nTravel and Directions\nThe address is Lauriston Farm Road\, Edinburgh EH4 5EX. \nThe main community entrance is at the back of the Toby Carvery car park. \nPlease use public transport\, walk\, wheel or cycle to get to the farm whenever possible. \nLothian Buses 16\, 27\, 29\, 37 & 47 all stop within 5 minutes of the farm and there is a bike rack at the community entrance. \n  \nWeather\nWe go ahead in most weather\, but we don’t want you to be cold and miserable – it’s meant to be fun! Please feel free to stay home if it’s too cold – there’s always another time.
