SUMMARY:Tree Care Volunteering
DESCRIPTION:Sapling survival rates are good thanks to positive human impact! Simple actions like weeding\, mulching and securing tree guards help the young trees we have planted to get properly established – they are going to transform the farm and will be pretty independent when they’re older\, they just need a helping hand to get started. Plus we may have some winter planting to do to fill in some of the gaps. Join us if you can – please sign up here: \nhttps://volunteersignup.org/3RHWR

DESCRIPTION:Drop in to the Community Garden for a fun gardening session led by one of our community team (Agnes\, Lisa and Hannah). \nWe will be running drop ins on Tuesdays and Thursdays 1-3pm until December. There will be plenty of tea on offer to keep us warm! If you’re free on a Tuesday or a Thursday afternoon\, come along and give it a go. You don’t need experience of growing or plant knowledge to join in. You don’t need to book\, but if you have any questions\, you can contact communityallotments@lauristonfarm.org \nIf you haven’t been before\, here are more details… \n  \nWhat should I wear and bring?\nIt’s all outdoors\, so dress for the weather and wear scruffy shoes\, but you don’t need special gear. We supply all the tools and gardening gloves. You might want to bring snacks to keep your energy up. \n  \nWho Will Be There?\nYou will find people of a mix of ages\, genders\, backgrounds and ethnicities volunteering at the farm. Most live in the neighbourhoods nearby. There’s always at least one member of the Lauriston Farm team at the organised volunteering sessions. We are trained in first aid\, mental health first aid and trauma awareness. Between us\, we also have lived experience of mental and physical health issues\, trauma\, and neurodivergence. \n  \nWhat if I am worried about my fitness or my energy – is it hard work?\nLots of people here have health conditions – including allotment holders\, farm staff and volunteers. But many hands make light work – everyone contributes by doing the bit they can do. When you are volunteering\, you can do the tasks that suit you\, go at your own pace and take breaks. It’s not a competition and we want you to have a good time! \n  \nIs it accessible for people with mobility difficulties?\nIt depends on what you use for support. There are no stairs to the Community Garden\, but it is on uneven\, grassy ground\, which can get muddy – people have accessed it in wheelchairs and mobility scooters\, it depends on the set up you have. If you use a stick or sticks\, and you feel okay on rough ground\, the Community Garden should be accessible. We are working on expanding our range of tools\, eg. long-handled tools to save bending. \nWhat about toilets and refreshments?\nWe have a private\, gender-neutral\, composting toilet volunteers can use. It is spacious and has no steps. We always have tea and biscuits at volunteering sessions. We don’t have public toilets or a cafe. \n  \nTravel and Directions\nThe address is Lauriston Farm Road\, Edinburgh EH4 5EX. \nThe main community entrance is at the back of the Toby Carvery car park. \nPlease use public transport\, walk\, wheel or cycle to get to the farm whenever possible. \nLothian Buses 16\, 27\, 29\, 37 & 47 all stop within 5 minutes of the farm and there is a bike rack at the community entrance. \n  \nWeather\nWe go ahead in most weather\, but we don’t want you to be cold and miserable – it’s meant to be fun! Please feel free to stay home if it’s too cold – there’s always another time.

SUMMARY:Volunteer to Help With Tree Care
DESCRIPTION:Sapling survival rates are good thanks to positive human impact! Simple actions like weeding\, mulching and securing tree guards help the young trees we have planted to get properly established – they are going to transform the farm and will be pretty independent when they’re older\, they just need a helping hand to get started. Plus we may have some winter planting to do to fill in some of the gaps. Join us if you can – please sign up here: \nhttps://volunteersignup.org/3RHWR \n

SUMMARY:Farm Tour of the Trees
DESCRIPTION:If you’re curious to learn more about Lauriston Agroecology Farm – and especially about why we planted so many trees – come along to our farm tour on Saturday 1st February. Click here to book tickets on Eventbrite \nFarming with trees (‘agroforestry’) was once commonplace\, and nearly got swept away by large scale industrial agriculture and monocrop growing. We will share how we are reviving it here at Lauriston Farm\, with all the hope and excitement this brings. \nWe will gather in the farmyard at the back of Toby Carvery car park – Lauriston Farm Road\, Edinburgh EH4 5EX \nThe farm tour will take in the: \n\nCommunity Orchard\nWoodland restoration area\nAgroforestry alleys (lines of trees that create sheltered and stable space to grow other crops\, as well as bringing crops of fruits and nuts themselves)\n\nYou’ll hear from the folk who look after the trees on the farm – sharing what we’ve done\, why we’ve done it\, and what we’ve learned so far\n+ then all return to the Community Kitchen for soup\, bread and chat. \nIf you want to make a day of it\, stay for the Orchard Wassailing in the afternoon \nWho is This For?\nWe welcome all curious visitors\, even if you’re a total newcomer and don’t know anything about farming or trees\, as well as farmers and growers and anyone interested in a career or volunteering in this type of work. It is aimed at adults or interested young people (the free community event in the afternoon is more suited to children). \nAccessibility Notes\nThis is a walking tour across the farm\, lasting around 1.5hrs\, potentially also suitable for all terrain/off road wheelchairs or mobility scooters\, but not standard wheelchairs. The ground is rough\, and will be wet and muddy in parts. \n  \nMore About Tickets\nClick here to book tickets on Eventbrite \nThis is a ticketed event to help us cover our costs. Tickets are on a sliding scale with ‘solidarity’ options (see below) \nStandard £6 \nSolidarity (+50%) £9\nSolidarity (-50%) £3 \n+ if the ticket cost is a barrier please get in touch with info@lauristonfarm.org as we have some limited free places available. \n  \nAbout Solidarity Pricing\nWe encourage those who can to pay a little more\, and those who can’t are encouraged to pay a discounted rate. We hope to foster more justice\, equity and diversity in our food system by charging on a sliding scale. \nWhat Price Should I Pay Within the Solidarity Model? \nWe suggest you consider paying the solidarity rate if you agree with one or more of the below: \n\nI am able to meet all of my basic needs and have some disposable income\nI have access to savings and/or inherited money\nMy rent/mortgage payments are less than 30% of my monthly income\nI am able to\, and would like to\, stand in solidarity with others\nI am able to stand in solidarity with the work of Lauriston Farm to build community\, promote biodiversity and support local provision of nutritious food\n\nWe suggest you consider paying the discounted rate if you agree with one or more of the below: \n\nI frequently stress about meeting basic needs and don’t always achieve them\nI have no\, or very limited\, expendable income\nI do unpaid care work or support children/other dependents on one income\nI do not qualify for state funds due to my immigration status\nI have to work part time/I am on a low income i.e. working less than 16 hours a wk\n\n—\nAnd finally\, we will have more farm tours throughout the year\, with different themes (April: Market Garden food production\, July: Grains\, and October: Agroecology across the whole farm)

There’s always cups of tea and good chats as well as time to enjoy the garden and the amazing view. \nIf you haven’t been before\, please come at 12:50pm (10 minutes early) on your first day\, so we can welcome you with a quick induction (but no need to book ahead). \nClick here for more details and answers to FAQs about the drop-ins

SUMMARY:Restocking the Seed Kist #2
DESCRIPTION:Our well-travelled Seed Kist needs dusted out and restocked. Join us for a cosy morning of cleaning and sorting seed\, packing and labelling\, with lots of hot drinks and chat. \nThis is our second\, and last\, Seed Kist prep session before the Big Seed Share on the 22nd February \nFor those of you unfamiliar with the Seed Kist\, we are incredibly lucky to have had poet Iona Lee visit the farm last year to create a poem about the Kist and the power of seed saving. Click here to see the poem and read the story about the farm from We Feed the UK
