SUMMARY:Orchard Wassailing
DESCRIPTION:Orchard Wassailing 2pm-4pm\n(all free\, no booking needed)\nJoin us in the Community Orchard for songs led by Penny Stone\, and merry noise-making with bells and drums\, to celebrate our beloved orchard trees and wish them a good year ahead. This is a fun and heart-warming event organised by our brilliant Community Orchard volunteers. Suitable for all ages\, free and no booking required. \nMusic + Tree Activities + Mulled Apple Juice + Noisy Fun \nBring a rattle or drum if you have them\, or make your own shaker on the day \nPenny will lead us in singing some tree songs\, and maybe a bit of dancing. We will have a ‘make your own shaking stick’ craft table\, plus greenery to adorn you if you want to look leafy for the occasion. Dressing up encouraged and welcome\, but not compulsory! You will be invited to write out a message and tie it to a tree\, and also to give the tree some woodchip mulch. We’ll finish with mulled apple juice (zero-alcohol) in the farmyard\, but you might want to bring your own hot drinks or food to keep you warm throughout. Please also bring your own noise makers and shakers if you’ve got them. \nOrchard Wassailing is an ancient tradition in orchard care\, upheld over centuries especially by the orchard keepers of Southwest England and the Welsh Marches. The story goes that it frightens away any evil spirits lurking in the orchard. Of course\, it also brings the community together and makes people feel protective towards the trees – which definitely helps protect them. By reviving and reinventing these traditions\, we renew our connection with the land and with each other\, and make the living world more vivid in our minds and hearts. If you’ve never Wassailed before\, come along and give it a try. And if you’re an old hand\, join us with your stories. No tickets or booking required. Come All Ye! \n  \n\nIf you haven’t been before…\nThe main farmyard entrance is behind Toby Carvery car park\, EH4 5EX. Click here for directions to the farm \nThis will be an outdoor event in our farmyard and Community Orchard. Please dress for windy north Edinburgh \nWe will be on rough\, sloping grassy ground\, which can be wet and muddy. There will be some slow-paced travel around the orchard (and possibly some birling – optional). The ground is potentially navigable by all-terrain/off-road wheelchairs or mobility scooters\, but probably not standard wheelchairs. If you use a stick or walker\, and you feel okay on uneven ground\, the whole area should be accessible. There are no stairs to the farmyard\, orchard or toilet. \nYou will be able to use the toilet in the Community Allotment & Garden area during the event (a spacious\, level access\, single cubicle\, gender-neutral\, composting toilet). \nThere is no cafe on site\, so please bring snacks if you need them to keep you going. \n

SUMMARY:Farm Tour of the Trees
DESCRIPTION:If you’re curious to learn more about us – and especially about why we planted so many trees – come along to our farm tour on Sunday 1st February. \nFarming with trees (‘agroforestry’) was once commonplace\, and nearly got swept away by large scale industrial agriculture and monocrop growing. We will share how we are reviving it here at Lauriston Farm\, with all the hope and excitement this brings. \nClick here to book tickets on Eventbrite \nThe farm tour will take in the: \n\nCommunity Orchard\nWoodland re-planting area\nAgroforestry alleys (lines of trees that create sheltered and stable space to grow other crops\, as well as bringing crops of fruits and nuts themselves)+ then all return to the Community Kitchen for soup\, bread and chat\n\nWho is This For?\nWe welcome all curious visitors\, including total newcomers with no previous knowledge about farming or trees\, as well as farmers and growers and anyone interested in a career or volunteering in this type of work. The tour is aimed at adults or interested young people (the free event in the afternoon is more suited to children). \nIf you want to make a day of it\, stay for the Orchard Wassailing in the afternoon \n  \nAccessibility Notes\nThis is a walking tour across the farm\, lasting around 1.5hrs\, potentially also suitable for all terrain/off road wheelchairs or mobility scooters\, but probably not standard wheelchairs. The ground is rough\, and will be wet and muddy in parts. \n  \nMore About Tickets\nTickets are £6 with solidarity options (see below) \nSolidarity (+50%) £9\nStandard £6\nSolidarity (-50%) £3 \n+ if the ticket cost is a barrier please get in touch with info@lauristonfarm.org as we have some limited free places available \n  \nClick here to book tickets on Eventbrite

SUMMARY:North Edinburgh Community Seed-Saving Initiative (Second Meeting)
DESCRIPTION:This is the second meeting of the new North Edinburgh Community Seed Saving Initiative. It’s open to anyone in North Edinburgh who is saving seed or interested in saving seed. The idea is to support each other in our seed-saving journeys and to create an abundant and locally adapted pile of diverse seeds for our growing community. \nWe will have hot drinks and biscuits to help the conversation along! Feel free to bring seeds for sharing. \nPlease email lisa@lauristonfarm.org if you would like to join on this date or at a future date. Also if you have preferences for days/times for future meetings. \nWe will meet in the Welcome portacabin in the farmyard (EH4 5EX) \nAs it’s a small indoor space\, this meet up is not suitable for bringing pet dogs. \n  \nAccess Notes\nThere is one step up into the portacabin. It is a rough compacted stone path from the Toby Carvery car park. The cabin is set on rough grass\, just off this path. This will be an informal and chatty gathering\, in a relatively small space. We don’t have microphones. There is some background noise from passers by and planes overhead. \nAssistance dogs welcome of course. \nThere is a spacious\, level access\, single cubicle\, gender neutral toilet in the Community Allotments that participants can use. This is on rough grassy ground\, no steps. \nThere is no on-farm parking\, but we can make arrangements for disabled people who need to drive in for access reasons. \nPlease contact us if you have any access requests or questions.

SUMMARY:Tree Planting Care
DESCRIPTION:You can make a huge difference to the future of the farm by helping out with the tree care. We have thousands of young trees and hedgerow saplings growing here. They’re already improving things for wildlife\, and bringing people together. As they grow\, they will make the soil healthier and more stable\, support much more biodiversity\, provide windbreaks and shelter for our crops\, and crops themselves of fruits\, nuts and coppice wood. For now\, they need human helping hands to keep back the grass\, and make sure their guards are in place to protect them as they grow. Will you join us? SUMMARY:North Edinburgh Community Seed-Saving Initiative - First Meeting
DESCRIPTION:This will be the first meeting to discuss setting up a seed-saving community in North Edinburgh. We are looking to gather a group who are interested in saving seeds\, sharing seeds and swapping seed stories. As it’s the first meeting\, it would just be great to share experience (none is necessary to join)\, what seeds you have saved\, what you would like to save\, and any seeds that you would like to share. \nWe will have hot drinks and biscuits to help the conversation along! \nPlease email lisa@lauristonfarm.org if you would like to join on this date or at a future date. \nWe will meet in the Welcome portacabin in the farmyard (EH4 5EX) \nAs it’s a small indoor space\, this meet up is not suitable for bringing pet dogs. \nAccess Notes\nThere is one step up into the portacabin. \nPlease email lisa@lauristonfarm.org if you have any access requests or questions.

SUMMARY:Market Garden Volunteering
DESCRIPTION:This will be the final Market Garden volunteering session of the year \nJoin us 10:00-12:00 to help out in the Market Garden\, and experience veg growing at a large scale \nVolunteer Sign up here: https://volunteersignup.org/3LCFJ  \nWe’ll share a coffee and biscuit after\, or you can bring your lunch to enjoy in the gardens. \nYou don’t need any specific knowledge or skills to volunteer in the Market Garden. You do need some energy and to be fairly steady on your feet. Market Garden volunteering sessions can involve quite a bit of walking and physical activity. The tasks are usually ‘big jobs’ where many hands make light work (eg. kneeling or bending to weed\, wheelbarrowing woodchip for paths\, planting a big area with transplants). \nIf you’re worried about your body’s stamina or mobility\, you might prefer to start with the Community Garden drop-in sessions instead. \nBut we don’t ask anyone to go beyond their limits for any task\, and you can always take breaks or rotate between jobs. You are welcome to use this as a way to help you build up your fitness. If you are not sure if it’s right for you\, please email info@lauristonfarm.org with any questions
