SUMMARY:Market Garden Volunteering
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday mornings 10:00-12:00 to help out in the Market Garden\, and experience veg growing at a large scale \nVolunteer Sign up here: https://volunteersignup.org/Q9F7J \nWe’ll share a coffee and biscuit after\, or you can bring your lunch to enjoy in the gardens. \nYou don’t need any specific knowledge or skills to volunteer in the Market Garden. You do need some energy and to be fairly steady on your feet. Market Garden volunteering sessions can involve quite a bit of walking and physical activity. The tasks are usually ‘big jobs’ where many hands make light work (eg. kneeling or bending to weed\, wheelbarrowing woodchip for paths\, planting a big area with transplants). \nIf you’re worried about your body’s stamina or mobility\, you might prefer to start with the Community Garden drop-in sessions instead. \nBut we don’t ask anyone to go beyond their limits for any task\, and you can always take breaks or rotate between jobs. You are welcome to use this as a way to help you build up your fitness. If you are not sure if it’s right for you\, please email info@lauristonfarm.org with any questions

They offer a series of practical courses and workshops\, run the Wester Hailes Community Herbal Medicine Clinic\, and the North Edinburgh Community Herbal Clinic in Granton\, support student herbalists with their clinical hours\, grow herbs in the the Blackford Glen Medicine Garden\, and produce simple resources to enable folks to practice herbalism at home.

SUMMARY:Birdsong Survey Walk (final walk for 2025)
DESCRIPTION:June brings the last of the 2025 survey walks – please join us if you can. \nEvery Spring\, Professor John Frank leads Birdsong Identification Walks around the periphery of Lauriston Farm. These walks are a survey – to count the bird species on the farm\, which is important information for the co-op as we work to increase biodiversity\, and John also uploads the survey results to the national Breeding Bird Survey. \nYou don’t need to know birdsong to be able to attend – John will teach the group how to use the Merlin app for smart phones\, so beginners are more than welcome; it’s a great chance to learn. Sign up to join the June survey walk here: https://volunteersignup.org/XCAC3

SUMMARY:Exploring Wildflowers - grassland and meadows
DESCRIPTION:Join Lauriston Wildflowers for an exploration of the wonderful world of the plants beneath our feet in the lawn and in meadows. Open to curious people of all ages! We’ll be getting familiar with our common grassland wildflowers and some of the insects that visit them\, as well as exploring the adaptations needed by grassland plants to survive. \nClick here to book tickets on Eventbrite \nIn the 20th century\, the UK lost 97% of our wildflower meadows so we will also look at the importance of these ecosystems and how we can care for lawns\, meadows and grassland to encourage more wild plants and animals. \nThis session is for people of any age and will be child-friendly. Please let us know if there’s anything particular you need from us to help you or your family participate. The nearest toilet will be at the farm or Toby Carvery – around a 10-15 minute walk away from the meadow. Please dress for the weather! \nThe what3words location for the meadow entrance is remove.super.lawn.

SUMMARY:Market Garden Volunteering
DESCRIPTION:The Market Garden beds are starting to fill up nicely. \nJoin us on Tuesday mornings 10:00-12:00 to help out\, and experience large-scale veg growing: \nVolunteer Sign up here: https://volunteersignup.org/Q9F7J \nWe’ll share a coffee and biscuit after\, or you can bring your lunch to enjoy in the gardens.

SUMMARY:Birdsong Survey Walk
DESCRIPTION:This spring\, for the fourth year\, Prof John Frank is leading Birdsong Identification Walks around the periphery of Lauriston Farm\, once a month from March to June. These walks are a survey – to count the bird species on the farm\, which is important information for the co-op as we work to increase biodiversity\, and John also uploads the survey results to the national Breeding Bird Survey. \nYou don’t need to know birdsong to be able to attend – John will teach the group how to use the Merlin Bird ID app for smart phones\, so beginners are more than welcome; it’s a great chance to learn. \nEarly starts for early birds – join us at 6am on Saturday 17 May.  Sign up sheet here: https://volunteersignup.org/7AKAR

SUMMARY:Introduction to Growing Your Own Food - Beginners Course (Thursday evenings)
DESCRIPTION:For the fourth year\, we are running our very popular Introduction to Growing Your Own Food beginners course. We will cover all you need to know to get you started with vegetable growing – including soil\, seeds\, propagation\, plant care\, no-dig bed making\, and compost. \nFor the evening course\, we will meet once a week on Thursday evenings (6pm-8pm) over six weeks to build up all your knowledge and skills\, and finish with a celebratory meal. \nThursday evening course dates are : \nMay 15th\, 22nd\, 29th & June 5th\, 12th and 19th \n“I really enjoyed getting involved in the practical aspects of the course and learning the theoretical! It was really well balanced!” (2024 course participant) \nWho is This For?\nThis course is for anyone who wants to learn how to grow vegetables using wildlife-friendly methods (no pesticides). You don’t need to have your own garden – maybe you will one day! Or you can use these skills in any community growing space. The teaching is aimed at adults but you’re welcome to attend with a baby or young child. \nVery lovely people\, I get lots of new information about vegetables\, and how important is the soil for all of us and the planet. I am happy that I participated in that course because helped me to gain confidence in understanding how to look after vegetables\, soil and the nature. (2024 course participant) \nAccessibility Notes\nWe will be teaching and learning in our Community Garden. The ground is rough and uneven\, but there are no steps and people have navigated it in robust wheelchairs. We will mostly be outdoors – be prepared for windy north Edinburgh! There is hands on activity\, but no heavy lifting. We have outdoor kit you can borrow (wellies\, waterproofs\, fleeces). We don’t have microphones\, but will be a fairly small group (under 20 people). \nSee below about ticket pricing and financial accessibility. \nAbout the Course Prices\nWe have three different prices. Paying the standard rate makes a contribution to covering our costs. If you can afford to pay the higher rate\, you enable us to offer the discounted rate to folk under financial stress: \nSolidarity (Pay it Forward) £120.00 \nStandard Price £80.00 \nSolidarity (Take if you Need) £40.00 \n(+ Eventbrite fees) \nClick here to book your place on the Thursday evening course via Eventbrite \nWe can arrange a free space if the cost would prevent you from being able to attend – please email communityallotments@lauristonfarm.org to request this \n
