DESCRIPTION:For the third year\, Professor John Frank will lead volunteers on birdsong identification walks around the farm\, once a month from spring to summer. This gives us a count of the bird species – an important part of our biodiversity monitoring work. \nYou can join us in 2024. You don’t need previous knowledge – John will teach you how to identify birds\, using the mobile app Merlin (ideally download this to a device that you can bring on the walk). \nWe have to restrict numbers on these walks\, to avoid disturbing the birds\, so it really is a case of the early bird catching the worm for the signup sheets. \nClick here to book a space on the March walk

DESCRIPTION:Drop in to the seed share to get some free seeds you can try growing this year. We are lucky enough to look after the Seed Kist at the farm – a stash of seeds for the community\, some saved from crops at the farm\, and by other growers in north Edinburgh\, and some spare commercial seed packets that people donated. You don’t need to bring any seeds if you don’t have any – it’s a free share\, and we want these seeds in your hands. \nWe will be in the green portacabin\, through the gate at the back of the Toby Carvery car park. It is level but rough ground\, with a step up to the cabin. We can come out to meet you if the portacabin is not accessible – feel free to contact us ahead of time if you want to make an arrangement\, or we can work it out on the day. \nNo need to book – it’s a drop in. See you on the 16th! \n

DESCRIPTION:Would you like to learn how to make a continuous flow vermiculture* compost system? \n*Vermiculture is a sustainable and efficient method of composting with earthworms that can be done in small spaces and has a wide range of benefits. It is a great option for those who want to reduce their waste and improve soil health. \nThis hands-on-tools timber based workshop will teach you all the ins and outs of this composting system. Led by Emma (from Lauriston Farm)\, and Marco (from Rhyze Mushrooms). DESCRIPTION:In this workshop Courtney will guide us through a range of creative and collaborative writing exercises that consider and celebrate our shared dependence with earthworms and compost ecologies. \nThe resulting texts will be shared as spoken word at our Worm Appreciation Day on April 13th\, there is also an opportunity to include excerpts of this writing in our Compost and Castings digital publication which will be shared as a free resource on Lauriston Farm’s website this Summer. \nCourtney Stoddart is a widely published poet\, writer\, mystic & performer\, whose work aligns itself within the Bardic lineages. She has performed extensively on national and international stages within the last 5 years. Courtney was announced as an Ignite Fellow of 2021 with the Scottish Book Trust\, and reached the finals of BBC Word’s First 2019. DESCRIPTION:Drop-in Volunteering sessions in the Community Allotments and Garden are running weekly on Thursdays 1pm-3pm. \nAll welcome\, and no experience needed – this is a great place to learn about plants and growing. If you’re free on a Thursday afternoon\, please come along and get involved. \nTo get here\, come through the gate at the back of the Toby Carvery car park – the allotments are on the right hand side\, past the portacabins. Click here to get directions to the farm. \nAccess notes: It’s level access (no stairs) from the tarmac car park\, to a compacted stone path\, onto an uneven grassy field. There is a gender neutral\, wheelchair accessible\, composting toilet within the allotment site. \nThere are a mix of heavier and lighter jobs to suit different bodies – you can choose what’s right for you on the day\, and go at your own pace. \nYou don’t need to book\, but if you have any questions you can email Lisa on communityallotments@lauristonfarm.org

SUMMARY:Bio-Based Ink for Screen Printing
DESCRIPTION:Screen printing is the process of transferring a stencilled design onto a flat surface using a mesh screen\, ink and a squeegee. Bio-based ink is non-toxic and doesn’t require petroleum-based solvents. \nWe’ll be working with oak galls to make a strong black ink to use in a screen printing activity at our Worm Appreciation Day on the 13th April. \nWho is This Event For?\nAdults aged 16+ who are interested in screenprinting and ecological arts. \nExperience Level: \nThis workshop is open to all levels of experience. \nThis workshop is ticketed with a solidarity pricing scheme. \nThose who can are encouraged to pay a little more\, and those who need it are encouraged to accept a discount. The idea is that by paying on a sliding scale\, we hope to foster more justice\, equity and diversity in our food system and society. \nIf you think you might be able to pay a little more for your ticket please ‘offer solidarity’. SUMMARY:Birdsong Identification Walk
DESCRIPTION:The monthly Birdsong Identification Walks continue. Professor John Frank will lead a group around the farm\, counting and recording the species you find on the day\, as part of our annual survey. You don’t need previous knowledge – John will teach you how to identify birds using the mobile app Merlin. To avoid disturbing the birds\, we have to restrict the numbers of volunteers on these very popular walks\, so it really is a case of the early bird catching the worm/spaces on the sign up sheets.
