SUMMARY:Market Garden Volunteering
DESCRIPTION:The Market Garden beds are starting to fill up nicely. \nJoin us on Tuesday mornings 10:00-12:00 to help out\, and experience large-scale veg growing: \nVolunteer Sign up here: https://volunteersignup.org/Q9F7J \nWe’ll share a coffee and biscuit after\, or you can bring your lunch to enjoy in the gardens. \nYou don’t need any specific knowledge or skills to volunteer in the Market Garden. You do need some energy and to be fairly steady on your feet. Market Garden volunteering sessions can involve quite a bit of walking and physical activity. The tasks are usually ‘big jobs’ where many hands make light work (eg. kneeling or bending to weed\, wheelbarrowing woodchip for paths\, planting a big area with transplants). \nIf you’re worried about your body’s stamina or mobility\, you might prefer to start with the Community Garden drop-in sessions instead. \nBut we don’t ask anyone to go beyond their limits for any task\, and you can always take breaks or rotate between jobs. You are welcome to use this as a way to help you build up your fitness. If you are not sure if it’s right for you\, please email info@lauristonfarm.org with any questions

SUMMARY:Birdsong Survey Walk
DESCRIPTION:This spring\, for the fourth year\, Prof John Frank is leading Birdsong Identification Walks around the periphery of Lauriston Farm\, once a month from March to June. These walks are a survey – to count the bird species on the farm\, which is important information for the co-op as we work to increase biodiversity\, and John also uploads the survey results to the national Breeding Bird Survey. \nYou don’t need to know birdsong to be able to attend – John will teach the group how to use the Merlin Bird ID app for smart phones\, so beginners are more than welcome; it’s a great chance to learn. \nEarly starts for early birds – join us at 6am on Saturday 17 May.  Sign up sheet here: https://volunteersignup.org/7AKAR

SUMMARY:Introduction to Growing Your Own Food - Beginners Course (Thursday evenings)
DESCRIPTION:For the fourth year\, we are running our very popular Introduction to Growing Your Own Food beginners course. We will cover all you need to know to get you started with vegetable growing – including soil\, seeds\, propagation\, plant care\, no-dig bed making\, and compost. \nFor the evening course\, we will meet once a week on Thursday evenings (6pm-8pm) over six weeks to build up all your knowledge and skills\, and finish with a celebratory meal. \nThursday evening course dates are : \nMay 15th\, 22nd\, 29th & June 5th\, 12th and 19th \n“I really enjoyed getting involved in the practical aspects of the course and learning the theoretical! It was really well balanced!” (2024 course participant) \nWho is This For?\nThis course is for anyone who wants to learn how to grow vegetables using wildlife-friendly methods (no pesticides). You don’t need to have your own garden – maybe you will one day! Or you can use these skills in any community growing space. The teaching is aimed at adults but you’re welcome to attend with a baby or young child. \nVery lovely people\, I get lots of new information about vegetables\, and how important is the soil for all of us and the planet. I am happy that I participated in that course because helped me to gain confidence in understanding how to look after vegetables\, soil and the nature. (2024 course participant) \nAccessibility Notes\nWe will be teaching and learning in our Community Garden. The ground is rough and uneven\, but there are no steps and people have navigated it in robust wheelchairs. We will mostly be outdoors – be prepared for windy north Edinburgh! There is hands on activity\, but no heavy lifting. We have outdoor kit you can borrow (wellies\, waterproofs\, fleeces). We don’t have microphones\, but will be a fairly small group (under 20 people). \nSee below about ticket pricing and financial accessibility. \nAbout the Course Prices\nWe have three different prices. Paying the standard rate makes a contribution to covering our costs. If you can afford to pay the higher rate\, you enable us to offer the discounted rate to folk under financial stress: \nSolidarity (Pay it Forward) £120.00 \nStandard Price £80.00 \nSolidarity (Take if you Need) £40.00 \n(+ Eventbrite fees) \nClick here to book your place on the Thursday evening course via Eventbrite \nWe can arrange a free space if the cost would prevent you from being able to attend – please email communityallotments@lauristonfarm.org to request this \n

SUMMARY:Volunteer in the Market Garden
DESCRIPTION:Lots to do in the Market Garden to prepare for a productive season so we really appreciate your help. \nJoin us on Tuesday mornings 10:00-12:00 \nVolunteer sign up sheet here: https://volunteersignup.org/Q9F7J \nYou don’t need any specific knowledge or skills to volunteer in the Market Garden. If you are not sure if it’s right for you\, please contact us with any questions.

SUMMARY:Farm Tour + Soup: Food Production
DESCRIPTION:If you’re curious to learn more about Lauriston Agroecology Farm – and especially about the Market Garden – come along to our farm tour on Saturday 19th April. \nClick here to book tickets on Eventbrite \nLauriston Farm is once again growing food for the surrounding neighbourhoods – a role it had for generations\, then completely lost. \nHere\, as elsewhere\, in a short time\, locally grown fresh food has gone from an everyday item to a rarity – unaffordable or out of reach to many people. But it’s time to bring it back using agroecology – for community health\, food sovereignty\, biodiversity\, climate adaptation\, and resilient local economies. \nOn this tour\, we will share what agroecological food production looks like in practice here at at Lauriston Farm\, at this moment in time. \nWe will gather in the farmyard at the back of Toby Carvery car park – Lauriston Farm Road\, Edinburgh EH4 5EX \nThe farm tour will take in the: \n\nMarket Garden\nAgroforestry alleys (lines of trees that create sheltered and stable space to grow other crops\, as well as bringing crops of fruits and nuts themselves)\nMiddle Field (the next area to be turned to food production)\n\nYou’ll hear from the Market Garden growers and some of the rest of the team – sharing what we’ve done\, why we’ve done it\, and what we’ve learned so far \n+ then all return to the Community Kitchen for soup\, bread and chat. \nWho is This For?\nWe welcome all curious visitors\, including total newcomers with no previous knowledge about farming\, as well as farmers and growers and anyone interested in a career or volunteering in this type of work. The tour is aimed at adults or interested young people (younger children also welcome if it would be their idea of a good time!) \nTickets\nThere are three ticket prices: \nSolidarity – offer if you can: £9 \nStandard ticket: £6 \nSolidarity – take if you need: £3 \nChoosing to pay the higher Solidarity rate helps us make the event accessible to those who can’t afford the standard ticket price. We suggest considering this if you are able to meet your needs with money to spare. Please take the discounted ticket if you need to. \nClick here to book tickets on Eventbrite
