SUMMARY:Tree Planting Care
DESCRIPTION:We have thousands of young trees and hedgerow saplings growing at the farm. They’re already improving things for wildlife\, and bringing people together. As they grow\, they will make the soil healthier and more stable\, support much more biodiversity\, provide windbreaks and shelter for our crops\, and crops themselves of fruits\, nuts and coppice wood. For now\, they need human helping hands to keep back the grass\, and make sure their guards are in place to protect them as they grow. Will you join us? SUMMARY:Drop-in Gardening
DESCRIPTION:Drop-in sessions switch to winter hours from today! \nWe run drop-in sessions every week in the Community Allotments and Garden. If you’re free on a Tuesday or Thursday (1-3pm)\, come along and give it a go. You don’t need experience of growing or plant knowledge to join in\, and you don’t need to book ahead. You can come any time in the opening hours and stay as long as you like\, but if it’s your first time joining us\, please try to come 10 minutes before the start time on your first day (12:50pm) so we can welcome you with a short induction. As ever\, if you have any questions\, you can contact communityallotments@lauristonfarm.org \n\n\nFirst time FAQs\n \nWhat will we be doing?\nA mix of gardening jobs in our shared garden. It depends on the time of year\, but things like preparing ground or raised beds\, adding compost or woodchip\, sowing seeds\, weeding\, planting trees and bushes\, making dead hedges\, harvesting veg and more. We try to make sure there’s a good mix of jobs\, so you can choose something that suits your health and energy on the day. You don’t need experience – we can teach you everything you need to know. \nWhat should I wear and bring?\nIt’s all outdoors\, so dress for the weather and wear scruffy shoes\, but you don’t need special gear. We supply all the tools and gardening gloves. We also have kit like welly boots and waterproofs if you need it. You might want to bring snacks to keep your energy up. \n\nWho Will Be There?\nYou will find people of a mix of ages\, genders\, backgrounds and ethnicities volunteering in the garden and tending to their allotments. Most live in the neighbourhoods nearby. There’s always at least one member of the Lauriston Farm team at the organised volunteering sessions. We are trained in first aid\, mental health first aid and trauma awareness. Between us\, we also have lived experience of mental and physical health issues\, trauma\, and neurodivergence. \n\nWhat if I am worried about my fitness or my energy – is it hard work?\nLots of people here have health conditions – including allotment holders\, farm staff and volunteers. But many hands make light work – everyone contributes by doing the bit they can do. When you are volunteering\, you can do the tasks that suit you\, go at your own pace and take breaks. It’s not a competition and we want you to have a good time! \n\nIs it accessible for people with mobility difficulties?\nIt depends on what you use for support. There are no stairs to the Community Garden\, but it is on uneven\, grassy ground\, which can get muddy – people have accessed it in wheelchairs and mobility scooters\, it depends on the set up you have. If you use a stick or sticks\, and you feel okay on rough ground\, the Community Garden should be accessible. We are working on expanding our range of tools\, eg. long-handled tools to save bending. \nWhat about toilets and refreshments?\nWe have a private\, single cubicle\, gender-neutral\, composting toilet volunteers can use. It is spacious and has no steps. \nWe always have tea and biscuits at volunteering sessions. \nWe don’t have a cafe or public toilets. \nTravel and Directions\nThe address is Lauriston Farm Road\, Edinburgh EH4 5EX. \nThe main community entrance is at the back of the Toby Carvery car park. \nPlease use public transport\, walk\, wheel or cycle to get to the farm whenever possible. \nLothian Buses 16\, 27\, 29\, 37 & 47 all stop within 5 minutes of the farm and there is a bike rack at the community entrance. \nWeather\nWe go ahead in most weather\, but we don’t want you to be cold and miserable – it’s meant to be fun! Please feel free to stay home if it’s too cold – there’s always another time.

SUMMARY:Market Garden Volunteering
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday mornings 10:00-12:00 to help out in the Market Garden\, and experience veg growing at a large scale \nVolunteer Sign up here: https://volunteersignup.org/3LCFJ  \nWe’ll share a coffee and biscuit after\, or you can bring your lunch to enjoy in the gardens. \nYou don’t need any specific knowledge or skills to volunteer in the Market Garden. You do need some energy and to be fairly steady on your feet. Market Garden volunteering sessions can involve quite a bit of walking and physical activity. The tasks are usually ‘big jobs’ where many hands make light work (eg. kneeling or bending to weed\, wheelbarrowing woodchip for paths\, planting a big area with transplants). \nIf you’re worried about your body’s stamina or mobility\, you might prefer to start with the Community Garden drop-in sessions instead. \nBut we don’t ask anyone to go beyond their limits for any task\, and you can always take breaks or rotate between jobs. You are welcome to use this as a way to help you build up your fitness. If you are not sure if it’s right for you\, please email info@lauristonfarm.org with any questions
