SUMMARY:Tree Care Volunteering
DESCRIPTION:The bareroot tree planting season is now finished\, and we now have around 12\,000 tree and hedgerow saplings planted at the farm! The young trees need our help to survive and thrive\, by weeding\, mulching and ensuring posts and guards are secure. We’d love your helping hands (and just to re-assure you\, we don’t do all 12\,000 in one session!). Please sign up here if you can join us to do some tree care in May: https://volunteersignup.org/HPT4T

SUMMARY:Market Garden Volunteering
DESCRIPTION:Friends\, please help! May will surely bring sunshine and laughter after the Beltane celebrations. Come and make the most of it by helping our growers recover from a supernaturally soggy April. There’ll be lots of learning\, fun and camaraderie. \nClick here to register on Volunteer Signup \nWe are aiming to more than double the amount of veg we grow in the Market Garden this year. This is exciting but also scary and there is a lot to be done to prepare the Market Garden for a successful season. \nIt’s a great chance for a fresh outdoor workout too. Get your cardio in while working on your core strength too.

SUMMARY:Drop-in Volunteering
DESCRIPTION:Drop-in Volunteering sessions in the Community Allotments and Garden are now running weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays 2pm-5pm. \nAll are welcome\, and no experience needed – this is a great place to learn about plants and growing. Come along and get involved whenever you are free. \nTo get here\, come through the gate at the back of the Toby Carvery car park – the allotments are on the right hand side\, past the portacabins. Click here to get directions to the farm. \nAccess notes: It’s level access (no stairs) from the tarmac car park\, to a compacted stone path\, onto an uneven grassy field. There is a gender neutral\, wheelchair accessible\, composting toilet within the allotment site. \nThere are a mix of heavier and lighter jobs to suit different bodies – you can choose what’s right for you on the day\, and go at your own pace. \nYou don’t need to book\, but if you have any questions you can email Lisa and Agnes on communityallotments@lauristonfarm.org

SUMMARY:Spring Birdsong Survey
DESCRIPTION:As the days get longer\, the starts get earlier! For the third bird survey of this season\, Professor John Frank will lead a group around the farm\, counting and recording the species you find on the day. You don’t need previous knowledge – John will teach you how to identify birds using the mobile app Merlin. We have to restrict the numbers of people on these very popular walks\, so it really is a case of the early bird catching the worm/spaces on the sign up sheet. And please do remember to cancel if you can no longer make it\, as someone else would love to step in. Here’s the sign up sheet: https://volunteersignup.org/KALPB\n\n

DESCRIPTION:We will be sowing\, potting\, planting\, mulching\, growing\, learning and sharing in the Market Garden. Having volunteers on weekdays is really helping our growers as they scale up food production this year. SUMMARY:Healthy Plant Communities - a special event to open the Community Kitchen
DESCRIPTION:The idea for the Community Kitchen came from the allotment holders at the farm. It will give space to socialise and eat\, to share produce\, and extend the welcome to other local residents. It was funded by the Edinburgh Community Climate Fund\, thanks to the votes we received from supporters. And it was built by hand by many volunteers. \nSo\, the kitchen was made by and for the people in this community – but our community also includes all the plant and animal life too. \nThis is why we have invited Scotland’s Plant Health Centre and other experts to join us for the afternoon. \n  \n \nWe will have info sessions from:\nGerry Sadler: Chief Plant Health Officer for Scotland \nMatt Elliot: Plant Health & Biosecurity Scientist at RBGE \n(and our own) \nRob Davidson: Experienced Ecologist and Orchardist \nLisa Houston: Community Growing Development Coordinator & Earthen Building Expert \nTogether we will explore how plant health connects with wider community health. You can learn how to source seeds safely\, spot signs of plant disease\, get healthy compost\, and protect the wider ecosystem when growing your own fruit and veg. Along with artists Gretchen Maynard-Hayn and Emma Brierley\, you can help us make a useful guide for anyone who has an allotment or veg patch. We’ll be screening a short film in one of the sheds. And you can eat pizza cooked in our new earthen oven! \nIt’s free\, but we do need to know numbers\, so \nplease click here to book a ticket

SUMMARY:Market Garden Volunteering
DESCRIPTION:We will be sowing\, potting\, planting\, mulching\, growing\, learning and sharing in the Market Garden. Having volunteers on weekdays is really helping our growers as they scale up food production this year. You don’t need previous experience or knowledge of farming or growing – we can teach you what you need to do. But\, these are quite active sessions\, over a large area of ground\, in (pretty much) all weathers\, so you will need suitable outdoor clothes and strong footwear\, and to be ready for some exercise! \nPlease sign up here to join us: \nhttps://volunteersignup.org/DLKDF

SUMMARY:Spring Birdsong Survey
DESCRIPTION:As the days get longer\, the starts get earlier! For the fourth and final bird survey of this season\, Professor John Frank will lead a group around the farm\, counting and recording the species you find on the day. \nHere’s the sign up sheet: \nhttps://volunteersignup.org/KALPB
