SUMMARY:Introduction to Seed Saving (one-day workshop)
DESCRIPTION:Click here to book tickets on Eventbrite \nLearn to save seed from the crops you grow. This one-day workshop gives an introduction to why we should all be saving seed\, and the basics of how to go about it\, with opportunities for hands-on experience and a chance to see the farm’s various seed-saving projects. \nThe day will include a tour of the Market Garden\, practical activities in the Community Garden\, with fresh soup and bread for lunch\, plenty of time for questions and chat. \nThis is one of our favourite subjects and we’re excited to share it with you – join us if you can! \npart of Our Seeds – the ongoing project to rebuild seed sovereignty in north Edinburgh\n~~Our Seeds: All Seeds are Migrants\, Every Seed Has a Story ~~ \nClick here to book tickets on Eventbrite \nAccessibility Notes\nThis workshop includes crossing the farm to tour the market garden\, and hands-on seed saving activities in the community garden. No heavy lifting. The ground is rough and uneven in the gardens and across the farm. We will be outdoors most of the time – be prepared for windy north Edinburgh! We have outdoor kit you can borrow (wellies\, waterproofs\, fleeces). We don’t have microphones\, but will be a fairly small group (under 20 people).\nSee below about ticket pricing and financial accessibility. \nAbout the Ticket Prices\nWe have three different prices. Paying the standard rate makes a contribution to covering our costs. If you can afford to pay the higher rate\, you enable us to offer the discounted rate to folk under financial stress: \n\nSolidarity (Pay it Forward) £30\nStandard Price £20\nSolidarity (Take if you Need) £10.00\n+ Eventbrite fees %\n\nWe can also offer a free space if the cost would prevent you from being able to attend – please email communityallotments@lauristonfarm.org to request this

SUMMARY:Community Meal
DESCRIPTION:An experiment! We’ve been looking for a way to do regular community meals at the Community Kitchen. This summer\, we are going to try it out with a pot of soup and a salad using our very own veg\, with some delicious Granton Garden Bakery bread\, on the last Thursday of the summer months at 1pm (31 July\, 28 August & 25 September). \nIf you want to get more involved\, you can help prepare the meal by coming along to the Tuesday drop-in session in the same week\, when we will harvest the veg and do some meal prep. \nYou can also bring something to share on the day if you feel like it (but absolutely not necessary). Everyone welcome\, no need to book – just come along and eat. We will be at the hand built Kitchen in the Community Garden and Allotments.

SUMMARY:Volunteer Tree Care
DESCRIPTION:We have thousands of young trees and hedgerow saplings growing at the farm. They’re already improving things for wildlife\, and bringing people together. As they grow\, they will make the soil healthier and more stable\, support much more biodiversity\, provide windbreaks and shelter for our crops\, and crops themselves of fruits\, nuts and coppice wood. For now\, they need human helping hands to keep back the grass\, and make sure their guards are in place to protect them as they grow. Will you join us? SUMMARY:Our Grains: Threshing Time
DESCRIPTION:Participate in hand threshing our History of Wheat plot\, with Edinburgh Agroecology Co-op and Granton Community Gardeners… \nWe have a selection of grains that were harvested over the last month from our History of Wheat plot. We need hands to help thresh and winnow them from their ears. Come along\, lend us your hands and learn about why we grow heritage grain crops and what we are learning from the grains along the way\, as well as about our wider plans for grain production at the farm. No experience needed – we can teach you the skills. \nWe’ll also have some tasters of the various grains for you to try. \nSign up here to join us: https://volunteersignup.org/JTJPY

SUMMARY:Market Garden Volunteering
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday mornings 10:00-12:00 to help out in the Market Garden\, and experience veg growing at a large scale \nVolunteer Sign up here: https://volunteersignup.org/3LCFJ  \nWe’ll share a coffee and biscuit after\, or you can bring your lunch to enjoy in the gardens. \nYou don’t need any specific knowledge or skills to volunteer in the Market Garden. You do need some energy and to be fairly steady on your feet. Market Garden volunteering sessions can involve quite a bit of walking and physical activity. The tasks are usually ‘big jobs’ where many hands make light work (eg. kneeling or bending to weed\, wheelbarrowing woodchip for paths\, planting a big area with transplants). \nIf you’re worried about your body’s stamina or mobility\, you might prefer to start with the Community Garden drop-in sessions instead. \nBut we don’t ask anyone to go beyond their limits for any task\, and you can always take breaks or rotate between jobs. You are welcome to use this as a way to help you build up your fitness. If you are not sure if it’s right for you\, please email info@lauristonfarm.org with any questions

SUMMARY:Our Seeds: Kale Threshing Party
DESCRIPTION:We have been ‘crowd breeding’ some crops in collaboration with other growers throughout the UK and Ireland. This means working together to create genetically diverse and promiscuously pollinating vegetable populations. One of the target crops is kale. Our group selected six kale varieties in early 2024 and sowed them in a mix. We grew them to flower (when we hope they did a bunch of cross-pollinating) and over the last month\, we’ve been collecting the resulting seed. This now needs some threshing hands (and maybe some stomping feet) and some wind winnowing. The seed will then be regathered from across the UK and Ireland\, mixed up and redistributed for another sowing\, which should make a more and more genetically diverse and resilient crop over time. \nCome along to help get this seed ready to share again. You can help thresh and clean the seed\, and hear a bit about our other crowd-breeding projects (broad bean\, summer squash and collards). No previous experience needed – we can teach you how. \nSign up here to join us: \nhttps://volunteersignup.org/9YK9B
