SUMMARY:Farm Tour of the Trees
DESCRIPTION:If you’re curious to learn more about us – and especially about why we planted so many trees – come along to our farm tour on Sunday 1st February. \nFarming with trees (‘agroforestry’) was once commonplace\, and nearly got swept away by large scale industrial agriculture and monocrop growing. We will share how we are reviving it here at Lauriston Farm\, with all the hope and excitement this brings. \nClick here to book tickets on Eventbrite \nThe farm tour will take in the: \n\nCommunity Orchard\nWoodland re-planting area\nAgroforestry alleys (lines of trees that create sheltered and stable space to grow other crops\, as well as bringing crops of fruits and nuts themselves)+ then all return to the Community Kitchen for soup\, bread and chat\n\nWho is This For?\nWe welcome all curious visitors\, including total newcomers with no previous knowledge about farming or trees\, as well as farmers and growers and anyone interested in a career or volunteering in this type of work. The tour is aimed at adults or interested young people (the free event in the afternoon is more suited to children). \nIf you want to make a day of it\, stay for the Orchard Wassailing in the afternoon \n  \nAccessibility Notes\nThis is a walking tour across the farm\, lasting around 1.5hrs\, potentially also suitable for all terrain/off road wheelchairs or mobility scooters\, but probably not standard wheelchairs. The ground is rough\, and will be wet and muddy in parts. \n  \nMore About Tickets\nTickets are £6 with solidarity options (see below) \nSolidarity (+50%) £9\nStandard £6\nSolidarity (-50%) £3 \n+ if the ticket cost is a barrier please get in touch with info@lauristonfarm.org as we have some limited free places available \n  \nClick here to book tickets on Eventbrite

SUMMARY:Orchard Wassailing
DESCRIPTION:Orchard Wassailing 2pm-4pm\n(all free\, no booking needed)\nJoin us in the Community Orchard for songs led by Penny Stone\, and merry noise-making with bells and drums\, to celebrate our beloved orchard trees and wish them a good year ahead. This is a fun and heart-warming event organised by our brilliant Community Orchard volunteers. Suitable for all ages\, free and no booking required. \nMusic + Tree Activities + Mulled Apple Juice + Noisy Fun \nBring a rattle or drum if you have them\, or make your own shaker on the day \nPenny will lead us in singing some tree songs\, and maybe a bit of dancing. We will have a ‘make your own shaking stick’ craft table\, plus greenery to adorn you if you want to look leafy for the occasion. Dressing up encouraged and welcome\, but not compulsory! You will be invited to write out a message and tie it to a tree\, and also to give the tree some woodchip mulch. We’ll finish with mulled apple juice (zero-alcohol) in the farmyard\, but you might want to bring your own hot drinks or food to keep you warm throughout. Please also bring your own noise makers and shakers if you’ve got them. \nOrchard Wassailing is an ancient tradition in orchard care\, upheld over centuries especially by the orchard keepers of Southwest England and the Welsh Marches. The story goes that it frightens away any evil spirits lurking in the orchard. Of course\, it also brings the community together and makes people feel protective towards the trees – which definitely helps protect them. By reviving and reinventing these traditions\, we renew our connection with the land and with each other\, and make the living world more vivid in our minds and hearts. If you’ve never Wassailed before\, come along and give it a try. And if you’re an old hand\, join us with your stories. No tickets or booking required. Come All Ye! \n  \n\nIf you haven’t been before…\nThe main farmyard entrance is behind Toby Carvery car park\, EH4 5EX. Click here for directions to the farm \nThis will be an outdoor event in our farmyard and Community Orchard. Please dress for windy north Edinburgh \nWe will be on rough\, sloping grassy ground\, which can be wet and muddy. There will be some slow-paced travel around the orchard (and possibly some birling – optional). The ground is potentially navigable by all-terrain/off-road wheelchairs or mobility scooters\, but probably not standard wheelchairs. If you use a stick or walker\, and you feel okay on uneven ground\, the whole area should be accessible. There are no stairs to the farmyard\, orchard or toilet. \nYou will be able to use the toilet in the Community Allotment & Garden area during the event (a spacious\, level access\, single cubicle\, gender-neutral\, composting toilet). \nThere is no cafe on site\, so please bring snacks if you need them to keep you going. \n

SUMMARY:Restock Seed Kist - Getting ready for seed sharing season!
DESCRIPTION:It’s that time of year when we are all starting to think about sowing seeds\, swapping seeds and sharing seeds. In Feb and March we will be cracking open our Seed Kist in order to share seeds with the community for free. \nWe need your help to get it stocked and ready. We will be filling and labelling seed envelopes and organsing the kist into some kind of seedy sense. \nWe will be in the Welcome portacabin in the farmyard\, a warm space with refreshments to keep us going. \nPlease sign up here to join us: https://volunteersignup.org/K4ER7 \n  \nAccess Notes\nThere is one step up into the portacabin. It is a rough compacted stone path from the Toby Carvery car park. The cabin is set on rough grass\, just off this path. The tasks can mostly be done seated and don’t require heavy lifting. \nThis will be an informal and chatty gathering\, in a relatively small space. There is some background noise from passers by and planes overhead. \nAssistance dogs welcome of course. \nThere is a spacious\, level access\, single cubicle\, gender neutral toilet in the Community Allotments that participants can use. This is on rough grassy ground\, no steps. \nThere is no on-farm parking\, but we can make arrangements for disabled people who need to drive in for access reasons. \nPlease email contact us if you have any access requests or questions.

SUMMARY:Tree Planting
DESCRIPTION:Join us in February to plant 800 new trees in agroforestry strips. Agroforestry is a farming system that combines trees with other crops or pasture. We do this because the trees bring so many benefits\, including water retention\, wind protection\, soil health and crop fertility. \nWe will be planting a range of native trees which will support more pollinators and birds coming onto the farm. The trees will also provide us with a source of ramial (small branch) woodchip for enhancing soil health\, and can be coppiced for timber for use on the farm. Coppicing is an ancient way of managing woodland which provides timber while encouraging tree growth. We can chat more about all this as we plant – join us if you. Please sign up here: https://volunteersignup.org/DMJET \nAccess Notes\nWe will be working in the Market Garden area of the farm. The ground is rough and we will mostly be on grass and soil\, not paths. This session will include quite a lot of walking and bending. No heavy lifting needed. Please contact us if you have any access questions or requests

SUMMARY:Seed Swap and Share
DESCRIPTION:Seeds are about abundance and connection – and where would we be without them? Come and share the seed love on Valentine’s Day by getting yourself some seeds to start your growing this year. Or bring along some spare seeds that you would like others to grow. We will have our beautiful Seed Kist well-stocked and ready for you. You are welcome to just come and take\, no need to bring seeds\, but at the same time\, all seeds are welcome. \nDrop in to the Welcome cabin in the farmyard\, no need to book \nAbout the Seed Kist\nThe Seed Kist has had an adventurous life of sharing seeds across Scotland. It started with the Fife Diet Seed Truck. The Seed Kist travelled all over Scotland in the truck\, holding a stash of seeds to give away\, plus the seeds gathered along the route in swaps. Then the Common Good Food project (formed by Fergus Walker\, Mags Hall and Rob Davidson) picked up the baton\, and the Kist\, and gave away thousands more free seeds across Scotland. Now the Kist lives with us at Lauriston Farm\, as a community resource\, storing seeds we’ve saved and been gifted so we can share them onwards with you. \n \n  \nAccess Notes\nThere is one step up into the portacabin. It is a rough compacted stone path from the Toby Carvery car park. The cabin is set on rough grass\, just off this path. This will be an informal and chatty gathering\, in a relatively small space. \nAssistance dogs welcome of course. \nThere is a spacious\, level access\, single cubicle\, gender neutral toilet in the Community Allotments that participants can use. SUMMARY:Drop-in Gardening
DESCRIPTION:We run drop-in sessions every Tuesday and Thursday\, with Agnes\, Lisa and Hannah in the Community Allotments and Garden. If you’re looking for a way to learn about growing food… or to share the knowledge you have… or for community… or for some fresh air and gentle exercise… or to make a difference locally… or for a reason to get out the house – try coming along! Newcomers and beginners always welcome. Please try to arrive 10 minutes before the start time on your first day (12:50pm) – after that\, it’s drop-in anytime during the opening hours. \nYou can get involved with growing fruit and veg in the shared plot\, wildlife habitat enhancements\, and taking care of the wildflower mound and Community Orchard. Just come along on a Tuesday or Thursday afternoon and you’ll be welcomed in. \nWe’ve got outdoor work kit you can borrow\, plus gloves\, and we supply all the tools. Just bring yourself. \nClick here for more details\, access notes and FAQs \nAs ever\, if you have any questions\, you can contact communityallotments@lauristonfarm.org
