DESCRIPTION:The farm produces a lot of its own seed because we know from experience that if we produce our seed well\, it makes for way healthier plants than anything we buy. Seed learns to adapt to our soil and climate. Saving seed is a crucial part of food sovereignty\, and that means taking care of this year’s crop. Year-on-year\, we produce more seed and hopefully get better at it! We could do with some extra hands on Friday mornings to help us grow and care for our seed crops. \nIf you’d like to help with the crops that we are growing to save the seeds\, sign up here: https://volunteersignup.org/L73WY \n  \nWho Is This For?\nYou don’t need previous experience. For this session\, you do need to be fairly steady on your feet and have a bit of stamina for walking. We supply gloves and any tools. There will be quite a bit of walking on rough grassy ground\, and bending over to weed etc. No heavy lifting. The market garden is on the west side of the farm\, near Cramond Road South. You can come in from Cramond Road/Barnton Gardens on foot or bike\, but not by car. You can also walk or cycle across the farm from the Silverknowes side (approx 15-20 minute walk). \nIf you’re arriving by bike\, please don’t turn right off Cramond Road South/Barnton Gardens – it’s a dangerous corner. Keep going to the roundabout and go around it to get a safe left turn into the farm. \n

Market Garden volunteering sessions can involve quite a bit of walking and physical activity. DESCRIPTION:We have around half an acre of gorgeous Hebridean Rye – a really special and ancient grain originally from the Uists. And it is in need of a band of rogues!! \nIt was sown sort-of accidentally and the seed got mixed with a bit of wheat. We need a band of rogues to help us go through it to rogue out the wheat\, so that when we harvest the rye\, it doesn’t have any “rogue” grains mixed in. This is an ancient and ongoing practice: pulling the unwanted crop out by hand in order to get pure seed of the crop you want. \nNote: This one will be a bit weather dependent. DESCRIPTION:Our grain is looking so very\, very lovely and we would love to share its glory with you. This Sunday stroll will start at the community allotments for a walk through our History of Wheat plot sown last winter\, and then we will head across the farm to our agroforestry alleys to admire the Rouge D’Ecosse Wheat and Hebridean Rye. On the way\, we can chat about the story of our grain both on the farm\, Scotland and the world\, and we will have tasters so you can sample the various grains and taste their differences. \nNo booking needed – just come along \nAll ages welcome \nPlease dress for windy north Edinburgh. \n  \nAccess Notes & Directions\nThis is an outdoor event\, on uneven grassy ground. People have navigated the community allotments and garden in robust wheelchairs and with walking aids. From the allotments\, the walk across the farm to the agroforestry alleys takes around 20 minutes\, and is on uneven\, sloping grassy ground. DESCRIPTION:The farm produces a lot of its own seed because we know from experience that if we produce our seed well\, it makes for way healthier plants than anything we buy. Seed learns to adapt to our soil and climate. Saving seed is a crucial part of food sovereignty\, and that means taking care of this year’s crop. Year-on-year\, we produce more seed and hopefully get better at it! We could do with some extra hands on Friday mornings to help us grow and care for our seed crops. \nIf you’d like to help with the crops that we are growing to save the seeds\, sign up here: https://volunteersignup.org/L73WY \n  \nWho Is This For?\nYou don’t need previous experience. For this session\, you do need to be fairly steady on your feet and have a bit of stamina for walking. We supply gloves and any tools. Under 16s welcome\, accompanied by an adult. \n  \nAccess Notes & Directions\nWe will be outdoors working on the seed beds in the market garden. Please dress for windy north Edinburgh. There will be quite a bit of walking on rough grassy ground\, and bending over to weed etc. No heavy lifting. The market garden is on the west side of the farm\, near Cramond Road South. You can come in from Cramond Road/Barnton Gardens on foot or bike\, but not by car. You can also walk or cycle across the farm from the Silverknowes side (approx 15-20 minute walk). \nIf you’re arriving by bike\, please don’t turn right off Cramond Road South/Barnton Gardens – it’s a dangerous corner. Keep going to the roundabout and go around it to get a safe left turn into the farm. \n

Please try to arrive on time as we explain and set up all the tasks at the beginning. \nWe’ll share a coffee and biscuit after\, or you can bring your lunch to enjoy in the gardens. \nNewcomers and auld hands are all very welcome. You don’t need any specific knowledge or skills to volunteer in the Market Garden. You do need some energy and to be fairly steady on your feet. Market Garden volunteering sessions can involve quite a bit of walking and physical activity. The tasks are usually ‘big jobs’ where many hands make light work (eg. weeding\, wheelbarrowing woodchip for paths\, planting a big area with transplants). \nIf you’re worried about your body’s stamina or mobility\, you might prefer to start with the Community Garden drop-in sessions instead. \nBut we don’t ask anyone to go beyond their limits for any task\, and you can always take breaks or rotate between jobs. DESCRIPTION:If you would like to help harvest the rye\, please save these dates. We will need many hands. We will be able to confirm the dates and times closer to the time as we keep a close eye on the ripening of the grain and the weather. We will be taking to the field for the harvest\, possibly with some scissors(!) but also maybe with some mechanical scything. Only trained folk can operate the scythe\, but we will need people to pick up and bundle the sheaves of rye. No signup sheet yet – we’ll keep you posted. \n  \nWho Is This For?\nYou don’t need previous experience. For this session\, you do need to be fairly steady on your feet and have a bit of stamina for walking. We supply gloves and any tools. Under 16s welcome\, accompanied by an adult. \n  \nAccess Notes & Directions\nWe will be outdoors working in the agroforestry alley where the rye is growing (within the market garden fenced area). There will be quite a bit of walking on rough grassy ground\, and bending over to pick up the harvest. No heavy lifting. The market garden is on the west side of the farm\, near Cramond Road South. You can come in from Cramond Road/Barnton Gardens on foot or bike\, but not by car. DESCRIPTION:The farm produces a lot of its own seed because we know from experience that if we produce our seed well\, it makes for way healthier plants than anything we buy. Seed learns to adapt to our soil and climate. Saving seed is a crucial part of food sovereignty\, and that means taking care of this year’s crop. Year-on-year\, we produce more seed and hopefully get better at it! We could do with some extra hands on Friday mornings to help us grow and care for our seed crops. \nIf you’d like to help with the crops that we are growing to save the seeds\, sign up here: https://volunteersignup.org/L73WY \n  \nWho Is This For?\nYou don’t need previous experience. For this session\, you do need to be fairly steady on your feet and have a bit of stamina for walking. We supply gloves and any tools. Under 16s welcome\, accompanied by an adult. \n  \nAccess Notes & Directions\nWe will be outdoors working on the seed beds in the market garden. Please dress for windy north Edinburgh. There will be quite a bit of walking on rough grassy ground\, and bending over to weed etc. No heavy lifting. The market garden is on the west side of the farm\, near Cramond Road South. You can come in from Cramond Road/Barnton Gardens on foot or bike\, but not by car. You can also walk or cycle across the farm from the Silverknowes side (approx 15-20 minute walk). \nIf you’re arriving by bike\, please don’t turn right off Cramond Road South/Barnton Gardens – it’s a dangerous corner. Keep going to the roundabout and go around it to get a safe left turn into the farm. \n
