More About the Market Stall: Wildflowers
Our weekly Market Stall has a range of produce from north Edinburgh – either grown right here at the farm, or made locally. Here, we explain more about the wildflowers…
Three dedicated volunteers have joined the farm to set up and run the Wildflower Nursery, within the Market Garden area.
As well as working on wildflower planting around the farm, they are growing potted wildflower plants for sale.
You can buy these carefully-grown plants from the weekly Market Stall (as well as ordering in bulk if you are looking after a larger space).
Drop by to browse the selection on the day, or pre-order for collection – you can email the team at wildflowers@lauristonfarm.org to find out what’s available.
Why Plant Wildflower Plants?
If you have a garden or growing space, planting native wildflowers is a really good way to help rebuild local, healthy living systems. Many shop-bought ornamental plants don’t fit into the local ecosystem, so they may not provide any food to wildlife, or support the life in the soil. When you give space to the plants that naturally grow here, you help bring back a key part of the whole web of life.
After years of being weeded, mown, and crowded out by ornamentals in gardens and parks, and with local ecosystems all out of balance, these wildflower plants need a helping hand to come back and thrive.
When we restore local plant life, we support the network of organisms in the soil, and all the wildlife that uses those plants for food and shelter, which then support all other species to live. And the more we connect up our green and blue spaces – gardens and allotments, parks and farms, woods, burns, lochs, ponds, and the sea – into species-rich networks, the healthier and more resilient our whole ecosystem will be.
So, planting a wildflower plant is a small act with a big impact!
Why Buy From the Market Stall?
Buying the wildflowers, and the other produce, at the Market Stall, helps support the work of the farm and our fellow local community organisations. We are all ‘not-for-profit’ organisations – which means any ‘profit’ after our wages and costs goes back into funding our projects for the benefit of the land and community. Buying from us supports a local economy in north Edinburgh, keeping the money and the wider benefits in the community.
At Lauriston Farm, we are on a mission to change the food system and we need your support!
In turn you get fresh vegetables, flowers and plants grown right here at the farm, mushrooms grown by Rhyze Mushrooms, herbal remedies from Grass Roots Remedies, and fresh bread from Granton Garden Bakery. We have had people say it’s the best bread they’ve ever tasted, and we’ve had people nearly in tears about how good the tomatoes are. Come and find out for yourself…
